Embassy Information

The Embassy of Iceland in Paris was opened on January 10, 1946. The Embassy represents Iceland in France and is also accredited to six other countries, i.e. Algeria, Italy, Lebanon, Morocco, Monaco, Portugal and Tunisia.

The Embassy is also a Permanent Delegation of Iceland to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The role of the Embassy is to protect the interests of Icelanders and to promote bilateral, political, economic and cultural links between Iceland and the above countries and organizations.

Ambassador

María Mjöll Jónsdóttir

Ambassador María Mjöll Jónsdóttir took up her position as Ambassador of Iceland to France in August 2025.

She joined the Foreign Service in 2001 and has held various senior positions at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, including Director General for Political Affairs (Political Director), Director General for International Affairs and Development Cooperation, Director of Communications and Director of United Nations, Multilateral Affairs and Gender Equality. She has also served as First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Iceland to the United Nations.

Ambassador Jónsdóttir holds a Master of International Affairs (MSc) from the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), Columbia University (2006), a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Political Science from the University of Iceland (2003), and a degree in Classical Singing from the Reykjavik School of Singing (2001).

She is married and has three children.
