Human Rights Council – 60th session
Item 8: General Debate
Statement by Iceland
30. September 2025

Mr. President,

Today, as the foundations of our international system are tested and we witness an alarming global pushback against human rights and democratic values, solidarity within the international community is vital. Our shared principles must continue to guide our actions.

The Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action reminds us that the promotion and protection of human rights is a matter of priority for the international community. For states large and small, commitment to international law is more than principle, it is the foundation for protecting the dignity, rights, and freedoms of people everywhere.

From safeguarding our environment and addressing the human rights impacts of climate change, to advancing gender equality and pursuing peace, the tasks before us demand a strengthened multilateral response anchored in a human rights-based approach and cooperation. The Human Rights Council has a central role to play in this regard, by ensuring that all voices are heard and that accountability for violations is upheld.

Iceland remains steadfast in its commitment to work with all partners to ensure that the United Nations continues to stand as a pillar of cooperation, justice, and hope for generations to come.

I thank you.
